Transferring Credits Between Colleges

Many high school and college students are interested in transferring credits between traditional U.S. schools and states. ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ accepts credits from other schools and states that conform to our transfer policies. Applying credits from another school to one of our technical programs is relatively easy and shortens the completion time to earn an Associate Degree or Certificate. The following questions are typical of requests we receive. Contact ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ today for more information.

Can I Transfer Community College Credits?

Transferring College CreditsCommunity college credits can be transferred to other community colleges, technical colleges, and trade schools as long as they are within the receiving school’s guidelines. Community colleges are typically non-profit schools administered by a state’s governmental education department.

These schools are generally accredited by an accredited agency that improves their chances of transferability. General education course credits are the easiest to transfer because they tend to be (but not always) universally accepted. Specialized courses can transfer if they fit into the receiving school’s program curriculum.

Can You Transfer College Credits Out Of State?

Yes, college credits can be transferred from one state to your current state of residence or the state where you will attend school. Generally, any community college, technical college, or trade school has transfer policies and procedures in place for the convenience of their current students and prospective students. The exception may be for schools that are not accredited or have closed permanently. Start by searching the college’s website, emailing the school, or making a phone call.

Can You Transfer College Credits To Another State?

If you have earned college credits in any state, they are generally transferable to a different state. Higher education schools have polices to transfer credits to another state as well as receive credits from other states. There may be some exceptions, and you will need to check with the other school’s transfer policies before enrolling. The receiving school will be happy to have new transfer students to build its enrollment.

Will Community College Credits Transfer Out Of State?

Community college credits, especially general education courses, are among the easiest to transfer as long as they meet the receiving school’s guidelines. These schools’ courses and labs may transfer more easily than those from technical or trade schools because of the content and the school’s accreditation.  Differences between semester and quarter systems can complicate credit transfers, but they can be worked out.

Which Credits Transfer From One College To Another?

Schools generally accept college credits that meet their program’s guidelines, and grades of “C” or better were earned. A grade of “D” in a course or lab may be accepted by some schools, but you must get it approved.

College course credits transfer based on other factors, such as accreditation status, course content similarity, and the recency of the coursework are crucial for transfer. Most transfer credits fall into two categories: equivalent credits, which match a specific course, andÌýelective credits, which don’t have an exact equivalent but still count towards a degree. Courses from non-accredited institutions and obsolete or remedial-level courses are less likely to transfer.

Developmental courses rarely transfer, and more advanced or industry-specific courses may also be harder to transfer.
